Stormwater runoff is water from rain and melting snow that runs off streets, roofs and parking spaces instead of infiltrating the ground. Stormwater from urban areas is often polluted and must be purified before it is released to nearby streams, rivers, lakes or oceans. Water on the surface of the planet such as streams, rivers, lakes and oceans is called surface water and will also suffer from pollutions if the stormwater for instance is polluted.
